'Trotro' Driver (Pen)
Project type
Pen on A3 cartridge paper
Date
2014
Location
Ghana
In Ghana, a "trotro" driver is someone who operates a shared minibus or van, which serves as a primary mode of public transportation for many Ghanaians. These vehicles, often privately owned and operated, follow specific routes and pick up passengers along the way. Trotros are known for their affordability and efficiency in navigating both urban and rural areas, despite their often crowded and bustling nature.
The pen illustration I have created vividly depicts a scene familiar to many Ghanaians: a trotro driver engaging with passengers who are attempting to bargain after being dropped off at their destination. The driver, steadfast and determined, is seen charging his customers, while the passengers, despite carrying a significant amount of load that warrants additional charges, try to negotiate for a lower fare.
This artwork captures the dynamic and often lively interaction between trotro drivers and their passengers. The intricate pen strokes convey the intensity of the negotiation process, highlighting the cultural nuances of daily life in Ghana. The illustration not only showcases the vibrant hustle and bustle of trotro transportation but also reflects the economic realities and resilient spirit of the Ghanaian people.
